virtual worlds group - people
Vladlen created the Virtual Worlds Group when platonic truths were no longer cutting it. His theoretical work was recognized with the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, the NSF CAREER Award, and the Machtey Award. He enjoys hurtling through space atop his Ducati, geeking out on electronic music and art flicks, pinning new tacks on the map, and low frequency effects.
Pat is one of the three PH's of computer graphics. When he's not thinking about rendering architectures, graphics hardware, and visualization he likes to travel and spend time with family. Pat's work received some minor recognition including two Academy Awards. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Phil heads the Stanford Information Networking Group and is a recipient of the Microsoft New Faculty Fellowship. Heir to a long line of Rabbis and doctors, he tried to pursue academic achievements from an early age. His first efforts gravitated towards his own fickle interests, the resulting assessments on the part of his instructors being correspondingly dismal. He has since righted this wrong by assessing others.
Ewen Cheslack-Postava
Ewen grew up in New Jersey and got his Bachelor’s in Computer Science at the University of Virginia. He is currently a second year PhD student. Ewen is working on core system development and is our guru on security, scripting languages, and system architecture. Outside of work he enjoys hiking, reading, good beer, soccer, and is slowly learning to cook.
Sid masquerades as a third year PhD student in computer science working in computational geometry and computer graphics. In reality he plays soccer, falls off rocks, deprives himself of oxygen, and listens to Indian classical music.
Daniel H is a fifth year PhD student in computer science. He is developing the core virtual world system and its graphics architecture. Daniel enjoys hiking in Foothills Park, traveling, and winning German board games. He is the creator of the Vega Strike open source massively multiplayer game.
Jerry likes waffles. And chicken.
Daniel Gibson
Daniel G is a junior majoring in Computer Science and Math. He is working on content creation tools for virtual worlds. Daniel enjoys candlelit virtual dinners and long walks on the virtual beach. He also likes singing, teaching, playing German board games, and eating Neapolitan pizza.
TongKe Xue
TongKe has never grown out of his childhood fantasy of being a KungFu master. The type that catches metal swords with bare hands, flies over fire and water, blasts mountains open with streams of qi, and generally reinterprets the laws of physics. To this extent he hopes to cure the world's addiction to WoW by bringing WuXia to life in the world's first virtual Jiang Hu.
Chris is our artist-in-residence. Trained in the fine arts, he enjoys virtual sculpting and painting, teaching digital art, and time with his wife and daughters. After 20 years throwing dice in the pen and paper world of Dungeons and Dragons, he's finally convinced that the digital realm is ready to overthrow his favorite pastime.
